Colonization has exploited these natural resources, exclude the local people from natural resource management and co-opted the local knowledge, making it subordinate.

Berau on the Nose of Borneo

Berau regency’s area is 3,412,700 ha width (75% of it is land or 2,191,253.94 ha is forest area). 361,000 ha (+16%) of the forest area is protected forest, 1,310,383 ha (+60%) is production forest, and 520,499 ha (+24%) APL (Areal Penggunaan Lain/Areal for Other Use)/KBNK (Kawasan Budidaya Non Kehutanan/Non-Forestry Cultivation Area) (Berau Regency). The forest in Berau Regency is 2,194,299.525 ha width (RTRW Berau Regency 2005-2011) consists of Protected Forest 668,108.078 ha, Limited Production Forest 557,713.442 ha, Fixed Production Forest 179,299.747 ha, Conservation Forest 156,448.289 and APL 624,729.969 ha. Berau Regency is situated on the nose area of Borneo.
